Valdivia
Valdivia
University town at the river Calle Calle in a flat environment. The junction with the Cruzes river is at the exit from the town. Further down river, until the river mouth in the bay of San Juan, it is then called Valdivia river. The region is influenced by German settlers.
A specialty are the small breads with minced meat and onion (called “Metbrötchen” in northern Germany).
The local brewery organizes of course a beer festival with folkloric dancing groups. They are obviously inspired by some German traditions.
The town itself has no highlights to offer. Continuing along the river to Neblia one can cross by ferry to Corall and continue some distance until the Pacific. The landscape offers, however, no special interest and the Castillo de San Luis de Alba consists only of some brick walls and a couple of rusty canon barrels.
The main attractions of the town are, however, the many sea lions, which linger around just in front of the fantastic fish market where they wait for their share. And there is also the submarine from world war II which can be visited.
