Easter Islands

The flight from Santiago is a domestic flight. The baggage drop happens, however, at the counter for international flights. After landing the view looks quite tropical. Not only the palm trees remind of the carribbean but the mentality as well.

The Tourism lives of corse mainly from the Moai sculptures. These are more or less scattered all over the island. They stand mostly around in groups but there are also some loners. Of course they stand there back to the sea. A bit further inland one finds still a number of cylindrical stone blocs lying around. It looks, they where then rolled to their final place where they were transformed to Moai. Apart from the stone guys, the caldera of the Rano Kao volcano in the south-west is also worth a visit. The rim reaches a height of 320 m above sea level with a diameter of 1600 m. At the bottom of the caldera are some vegetables cultivated but there is mainly reed growing on the water covered parts. The Orongo cult site, which honors the birdman cult, is also located here on the top. Remains of houses and petroglyphen can still be visited. The location is breathtaking on a cliff above the ocean and the crater of the volcano.

To enjoy a circular view over the whole island and the Pacifique, one should walk up to Monte Terevaka. The rite, to heap up dry wood mingled with some bones and skulls of goats, could, however, not be elucidated.

Fishing contests are performed with harpoons and dressed in loincloth. The locals live amongst each other and tourists are just tolerated.
