El Chalten

Desierto2OHiggins
The emblematic trek between north and south Patagonia runs from El Chalten/Argentina up the valley of the rio de las Vueltas to the lago del Desierto.
The lake can be crossed by boat or on a trail running along the east side.
At the northern end of the lake is the Argentinian border post from where a nice single track leads over about 10 km up to the Chilean border.
From here a gravel road continues over another 15 km through the forest, passing by an airfield until it descends toward the Chilean border post at the lago O'Higgins.
You may cross Rodrigo, who takes care of the Ets. Candelario Mancilla and 200 cows, either on horseback or in his pickup which he uses to transport tired hikers (20 USD per leg).
Ets. Candelario Mancilla disposes of a campground and some very rudimentary rooms (80 USD).
A boat runs every day from here to Villa O'Higgins. Take the morning trip which pays a visit to the beautiful O'Higgins glacier and should not be missed or in the afternoon directly to Villa O'Higgins.

Long trail starting at Lago Desierto N shore. First bus from El Chalten  to S shore (about 40 km). Then ferry to N shore (Argentinian border control). From here single track to Chilian border. Then gravel road passing by airfield until Lago O'Higgins (Candelaria Mancillo). Manager of Estate Candelaria provides shuttle by Jeep or horse (expensive). To progress to Villa O'Higgins better check before if boat operates!

Laguna Torre
Trail starting in El Chalten. Easy walk mainly at level. Impressive views on Mount Fitzroy and Cerro Torre. The lake has a nice beach but maybe not for swimming.
